What Does Your School Board Do?
VISION
The Board sets mission, vision, & goals.

The Board adopts policies & monitors their procedural implementation by the District.
Financial
The Board is responsible for budget adoption & financial oversight, as well as decisions such as building schools, buying property, and placing levies on the ballot.
MONITORING
The Board monitors District performance. This includes evaluating, hiring, and (very occasionally) firing the Superintendent.
COMMUNITY
Community engagement allows the Board to learn and to represent the entire community, especially students.
What the Board Does NOT Do:
IMPLEMENTATION
The Board does not define procedure or HOW the District will implement the Board's mission, vision, and goals directives. The Board also does not set rules or policy at any school.
CLASSROOM LEVEL
The Board does not oversee what or how teachers teach or coaches coach. The closest it comes to the classroom is by approving curriculum.
STAFFING DECISIONS
Except for the Superintendent, the Board has no authority to hire, evaluate, or terminate staff.
only one voice
The Board must NOT represent only one part of the community.

Board members do NOT act as individuals. A Board member does not hold individual power or authority over the District--the power of the Board is as a collaborative decision-making body. Teamwork matters!
